wreck removal

Salvage the vessel, Safeguard the cargo, protect the environment

Salvage operations entails recovering a ship, its cargo, or other property after a shipwreck.
Salvage encompasses towing, refloating a sunken or grounded vessel, or patching or repairing a ship.
Over 25 years of Salvages and Towing Lucatelli has the capabilities for every salvage intervention.

Salvage operations

A ship can be exposed to waves, currents and weather or sheltered inside a harbor. No matter where the wreck is displaced, Lucatelli has the capability to perform the salvage in any condition.

Wreck  Removal

Wreck removal focuses on the removal of hazardous or unsightly wrecks that have little or no salvage value. Because the objectives here are not to save the vessel, the wrecks are usually refloated or removed by the cheapest and most practical method possible. In many cases, hazardous materials must be removed prior to disposing of the wreck.

Cargo  Salvage

Saving the cargo and equipment aboard a vessel may be of higher priority than saving the vessel itself. The cargo may pose an environmental hazard or may include expensive materials such as machinery or precious metals. In this form of salvage, the main focus is on the rapid removal of goods and may include deliberate dissection, disassembly or destruction of the hull.

Floating Dock Vlora

CLIENT : Italian Navy

LOCATION : Vlora Albania

DOCK DIMENSIONS : mt 110

WEIGHT : 1500 tonn

DEPTH   - 18 mt

The floating dock while in operation had sunken in the Albanian Navy Base of Pasha Liman near Orikum.

The Italian Navy gave as a gift a new floating dock but the only possible location was the one where the old floating dock had sunken.

Lucatelli was appointed by the Italian Navy, in charge of the removal operations.

The operation was not simple, due to the very poor conditions of the steel plates. 600 local repairs were made by means of small plates with gaskets and harpoons fastened on the plates.

Air valves were positioned on the air inlet and water discharge were prepared.

Once the preparation job was completed, the dock was succesfully refloated and towed to its new location.

Navy Keel

CLIENT Ravenna Port Authority

LOCATION  Piallassa del Piombone Italy

KEEL DIMENSIONS  mt 130 x 18

WEIGHT  2500 tonn

DEPTH  - 14 mt

During the dredging of the Piallassa del Piombone Port Area, a WWII shipwreck was found.
Lucatelli was appointed in charge of the wrecks removal.
As the double bottom was full of cement probably for ballast conditions, in order to reach the steel hull of the vessel, the concrete was broken with an hydraulic underwater heavy hammer connected to an excavator on board one of the 2 work barges employed during the operations.
Once the concrete was broken, the divers, with a vacuum system removed the debris, and then cut in sections of approx. 250 ton the vessels hull; the intervention was executed with ultra-thermic cutting rods  of various sizes.
At completion of the underwater cutting operation the sections were removed and deployed on the pier by the divers with the assistance of the A Frame Barge Hercule.
The job was successfully completed.

Concrete platform removal

CLIENT  Trieste Port Authority

LOCATION  Trieste Italy

DIMENSIONS  mt 40 x 20 x 5

WEIGHT  2500 tonn

DEPTH  - 20 mt

A container crane crashed on the platform moored to the Pier VII in the harbor of Trieste, Italy.

Lucatelli was appointed for the removal operations.

Due to the particular kind of concrete structure, the refloating was impossible due to the pumped air leaking out of small cracks, preventing the emptying of the platform.

To free the area and render it available for commercial operations, Lucatelli prepared an hydraulic device to dismantle the platform; the divers cut underwater all the iron bars leftover by the device.

At completion all the debris was removed by clamp shell.

The job was successfully completed.
